Q. What is the SV91M Hard Drive and Tape Degausser?
A. The SV91M Hard Drive and Tape Degausser is a specialised device used for erasing data from magnetic tape media, including various tape formats such as LTO, DLT, SDLT, 3590, and more. It utilises powerful magnetic fields to effectively eliminate data from magnetic media, ensuring complete and irreversible data erasure.
-
Q. How does the SV91M HDD and Tape Degausser work?
A. The SV91M Tape Degausser works by generating a strong magnetic field that penetrates the tape media. When the tapes are placed on top of the degausser and exposed to this field, the magnetic particles on the tape surface become randomised, effectively erasing the previously recorded data.
-
Q. Why is tape degaussing important?
A. Tape degaussing is crucial for secure data disposal and ensuring that sensitive information cannot be recovered. Degaussing eliminates the magnetic patterns on the tapes, rendering any previously recorded data unrecoverable. This is particularly important when retiring or reusing magnetic tapes to prevent unauthorised access to confidential data.
-
Q. What types of magnetic tapes does the SV91M Hard drive and Tape Degausser support?
A. The SV91M Hard drive and Tape Degausser is designed to support a wide range of magnetic tape formats, including LTO (Linear Tape-Open), DLT (Digital Linear Tape), SDLT (Super Digital Linear Tape), 3590, and more. It offers versatility in handling various tape media commonly used in backup and archival storage.
-
Q. Can the SV91M Hard drive and Tape Degausser handle high-capacity tapes?
A. Yes, the SV91M Hard drive Tape Degausser is capable of handling high-capacity tapes, including the latest generations of LTO tapes with larger storage capacities. It ensures effective degaussing across different tape formats, accommodating the needs of organisations with diverse tape storage environments. LTO tapes cannot be reused after degaussing.
-
Q. Does the SV91M Tape Degausser provide any verification of degaussing effectiveness?
A. No. There is no verification, audit trail or log reporting built into the SV91M.
-
Q. Can the SV91M Hard drive and Tape Degausser be used for on-site data erasure?
A. Yes, the SV91M Hard Drive and Tape Degausser is designed to be portable and compact, allowing for on-site data erasure. You may also purchase a transport case to make it easy to move around. This enables organisations to securely erase data from tapes within their own premises, minimising the risk associated with off-site transportation and maintaining data security control.
-
Q. Is degaussing environmentally friendly?
A. Yes, degaussing is an environmentally friendly method of data erasure. The SV91M Tape Degausser eliminate data off of HDDs and tapes, leaving no data and making some tapes reusable. Additionally, it reduces the need for physical destruction methods, which can generate waste and have a larger environmental impact.
-
Q. Are there any regulatory standards or certifications for tape degaussing?
A. Yes, certain regulatory standards and certifications exist for tape degaussing, such as NIST SP 800-88 and GDPR. The SV91M Tape Degausser may comply with these standards, ensuring that the degaussing process aligns with industry best practices and legal requirements for data erasure.
-
Q. What is the recommended procedure after degaussing HDDs and tapes with the SV91M Degausser?
A. After degaussing media with the SV91M Tape Degausser, it is recommended to follow proper procedures for recycling or disposing of the media according to the recycling regulations in your city or region.
